Is Chocolate good for you?

When I tell people that chocolate has many health benefits and is very good for their health and well-being often people think I am just trying to sell them more chocolate or making them feel better about their impulse snacking. While I do like to increase my sales I would never do that through misleading people. The core ingredient of chocolate is cacao. You can read more about how chocolate is made here.

Cacao has been proven to have many health benefits. Here are some of them:

  • Heart – helps restore flexibility to arteries
  • Respiratory/cough – the theobromine in chocolate can reduce coughing
  • Weight loss – a small square of dark chocolate 20 minutes before a meal will significantly decrease the amount you consume
  • Reduces risk of a stroke
  • Improves blood flow
  • High in minerals such as potassium zinc selenium iron
  • Reduces Cholesterol
  • Protects skin from sun damage
  • Lowers insulin resistance, lowering diabetes
  • Brain health/resilience – sometimes used in healing of brain trauma
  • Mood enhancing
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • High in flavonoids, an anti-oxidant that prevents cell damage

So the next time you want to indulge go for some dark chocolate. In moderation it could be  a very healthy choice.
